Modern life offers so many choices that sometimes it’s difficult to know what path to take. When decision paralysis sets in it can be a real headache if you’re a business owner. When you’re the boss, the buck stops with you. Any decision you make has a direct impact on how your business runs or is perceived. And that can affect your bottom line.

But what if you don’t make a decision?

That can be as damaging as choosing the wrong thing. There’s no easy answer, but we’d say that you have to make the right choice for you, given the information you have available, at the present time. Take the decision and – here’s the difficult bit – stick to it. Flitting from one path to another does no-one any favours, least of all you.

How do you know what the right decision is for you at the present time, though?

Well, if you’ve got a reasonable business plan, you’ll know where you want your business to be, right? So, immediately you can reject any decisions that don’t fit with that. Then, make a list of what you are trying to choose between. Try and find at least three pros and cons for each and then take stock again. Were some of those choices easier to find pros and cons for than others? If so, then that can help you refine your choice further.

Next, turn your attention to what outcomes you need from making this decision.

Make a list of these – say 4 or 5 – and rate each outcome numerically in terms of how important it is. Set up a chart and start plugging in those numbers. Once you’ve rated your options against the same outcomes, work out the total and you might be surprised at what comes out top. In theory, that’s your decision made.

If you’ve done all this and you’re still uncertain of what to do, go with your gut. Often, our instincts can be the best indicator of what will be best for us in the long term. Plot out how long you need to allow for the decision to take effect (6 months is often a good timescale) and ensure you have a plan B.

Finally, take a deep breath, take your decision and give it your all!
